Tornado Alley Roller Girls May 18th

Oklahoma City Roller Derby Hosts Wichita Kansas Roller Derby

Tornado season is in full swing and so are the Tornado Alley Rollergirls! This year, the bouts have become more of a “festival” rather than just a sporting event. Tailgating has become popular among the fans and they usually start gathering outside the Farmer’s Market (311 S. Klein in OKC) sometime between 4 and 5pm, even though the doors do not open until 6. It’s hard to tell who is more excited about the hard hitting and high scoring, the fans or the athletes.

The next bout will be held on Sunday, May 18th. The competition starts at 7pm. The Tornado Alley Rollergirls are hosting the ICT Roller Girls from Wichita, KS. Oklahoma City’s home team looks forward to making it perfectly clear to ICT that they are not in Kansas anymore.

“It’s commonly known in the world of roller derby that the ICT girls have a tried and true strategy referred to as The Wichita Wall,” explains the Tornado Alley Rollergirls’ well-traveled announcer, Moose Ondaluce. “The team will make a strong wall of bodies across the track, which makes it nearly impossible for even the most agile jammer to get through the pack and score points. The Tornado Alley girls are going to have to figure out a way to bring down the wall.”

Having skated away with a big win against Central Arkansas Roller Derby at the April 20th bout, with a score of 147 to 42, the Tornado Alley Rollergirls are eager to do it again. The win did not create an air of overconfidence, however, and they continue to practice nonstop. Endurance and blocking drills have been their primary focus over the past few weeks. These ladies are committed to improving their skills in order to give their Oklahoma City fans a home team they can be proud of.

Come out and support these hard-working athletes! Beer, merchandise vendors and ticket’s bought at the door accept cash only. Tickets at the door are $12. Advance tickets can be purchased for $10 at OKCLIVE.COM, Blue Seven, Book Beat & Co., DK Salon, Size Records, and Undisputed Tattoos. You can also purchase tickets at a discounted rate from your favorite rollergirl prior to the day of the bout.

The bout will begin at 7pm and will consist of two 30-minute halves with a 20-minute halftime. Halftime entertainment will be provided by local band Jayne Doe.

Momentum has propelled TARG into a second season with heightened excitement and a growing number of bloodthirsty fans. With 300 leagues worldwide, roller derby is making a tremendous comeback.
